PhotographyDigital photography promises much. Store your photographs on your computer, print them when you want, email them to friends and family – share them to your heart's content. Couldn't be easier, could it? So how come that for most of us storing and sharing our photographs is a bit of a nightmare?

The ease of using a digital camera is its very undoing. It's easy to take some shots and then ‘work on them later'. The trouble is that ‘later' doesn't happen often enough and we build up a huge backlog of images that we have to sort and process. That's where things start to get untidy. Very soon you won't know what you've printed or you won't be able to find the original file of that cute shot that your wife wants a copy of.

So what's the answer? As the Greek philosopher Hesiod put it nearly 3,000 years ago, "It is best to do things systematically and disorder is our worst enemy." You need to plan a system for processing your photographs and be systematic in everything you do

You probably remember that after the thrill of your first digital camera, you began to realize some of its limitations. Without a computer or other digital device, it's hard to share them with granny or the cousins back home. You realize that you have to have traditional prints to pass around and share.

So the planning system you adopt must cater for both digital and physical prints – you need a single system that organizes both and ensures your precious memories are stored forever.

Here's a six point plan to establishing your own system.

1. Decide how you want to organise your photographs

Without a system, you'll just get a list of meaningless file names. The longer this goes on, the harder it will be for you to find the photos that you want.

You've got to have a system – a way of organising – one that suits you. I choose to organise my photos by event – but you could do it by date, by family member or by whatever is meaningful to you.

Under ‘My Pictures' on my hard drive, I have four sub-folders – Family, Business, Holidays and ‘The Best'. The first three are self-explanatory; ‘The Best' is where I keep images of which I'm particularly proud.

2. Create mirror images on both your computer and photo album

People love traditional prints so no matter how proud you may be of your computer skills, to really share your photos with friends and family, you'll need physical prints to pass around. And to get the most from your memories you should have a single system that runs across both.

Once you've decided on your system – use the same categories on both your computer and your physical photo album.

3. Taking your photos

Snap away happily but don't carry around useless photographs on your camera or waste your time downloading them before deciding to bin them. As soon as you've taken photographs have a quick look at them and dump the ones that don't look special. Be ruthless and immediate.

4. Downloading back home

The temptation is to rush and get the exciting photos on the machine. This is where discipline is needed. You need to have an uninterrupted session. If you can arrange that easily fine. If you can't you should set aside a regular time once a week to do all your photographic work.

There are four tasks: Download your photographs onto your hard disk Edit them, e.g. get rid of red eye Give each file a meaningful name with a date – so instead of ‘P1010012' use ‘Sarah on the beach 07/03' Save them in the appropriate folder.

Now make a back up copy. This is essential – you don't want to risk losing your images. I use a ZIP drive for back-up.

5. Print your photographs

Plan what prints you want, print them and put them into your album immediately. Update your album index as you do so.

6. Store them and show them (but don't ever give them away)

Never give your album photographs away. If someone wants a copy, resist the temptation to hand them your album copy. Instead, print them a new one or email them a digital version.

PhotographyJanuary 8 2004--The International Association of Panoramic Photographers (IAPP) will celebrate 20 years of educating members and the public about panoramic photography during our international convention in Monterey, CA, April 27-May 2, 2004. The California coast will provide a spectacular backdrop for this unique event, open to US and international professional and amateur photographers.

For over a hundred years photographers have been shooting landscape and group panoramic photographs with old wooden wind up cameras which groaned and squeaked, pulling large pieces of film through the camera to produce long wide view photographs. Today new electronic panoramic cameras use standard films and computer tracking systems. Digital cameras and computerization has also greatly changed the way we make panoramic pictures. Today IAPP caters to both the traditional and digital panoramic photographer.

Our Monterey, CA. convention will focus on new technologies such as stitching images together in the computer, Photoshop, producing virtual images as well as the traditional methods of panoramic imaging. You can learn more about this event at www.panoramicassociation.org

The International Association of Panoramic Photographers was established in April 1984. IAPP has been providing continuous service to its members and become the clearing house for panoramic creativity and technical information. PhotographyThe business of stock photography has drastically changed over the last few years. Ten years ago, selecting photographs for your brochure or newsletter meant spending hours pouring over stock photography catalogs and ordering photo research to find the exact image. When the order came in a giant overnight package, designers would spread transparencies out on the light table, squinting through a magnifying loop to check every detail.

Enter the digital age.

High speed Internet connections. CD's. Searchable Archives. Royalty-free stock. These elements have changed the face of communication design forever. The quality, quantity, affordability and accessibility of stock imagery have made it the resource of choice for many organizations.

The advantages of instantaneous access to searchable archives of good images are numerous. Speed :: We can never have enough of it. Search. Download. Import. It's remarkable. Choice :: Searching "stock photography" on Google delivers 1,470,000 results. You can find pretty much anything out there. Price :: While there are free resources, unless you are doing a school report, you may need something slightly more exclusive. Also, many of the free images are only good enough for online display and the selection is very limited. Royalty-free images are reasonably priced, you pay for only the size you'll use and images can be used as needed with no extra charges. Flexibility :: Image selections can be grouped, saved and emailed to others in the review cycle. People in different locations can simultaneously review ideas. Archiving :: Some companies even keep a record of your buys that you can re-download whenever you need them. To use this resource effectively, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Plan ahead :: Will you ever need the picture to be printed? The low cost of "low resolution" images can lure you into costly mistakes. Images need to be 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the size they will be printed. Low-cost tradeoff :: Pictures are now so affordable, everyone's buying them. That means your image could show up in your competitor's brochure. Some projects call for more exclusive imagery. Image-enhancement :: When you need something totally unique, such as your product in the shot, it may be more economical to hire a photographer than to have your designer spend countless hours in Photoshop trying to get it just right. Availability :: Good images still cost money. While many firms have images on file, don't expect your designer to have a database full of images right for your project.

When searching on the web, search for "stock photography" rather than doing an image search in Google or another search engine. Google returns all images from the web -- including those that are the property of others and not legally usable.

Western landscape has long been a part of the American imagination. But rather than focus on a specific imaginative idea, my work communicates directly to the imagination: not the land, but what the land does to us. I look at intimate relationships with landscape and its elements, such as light and texture, to create metaphors. Therefore, the work transcends the boundaries of ordinary perception. It is as much about receptivity as it is creativity.
